Home was right ahead. I could always tell when the road grew rough that I was coming back to the country, back to where dad was spending the summer.
The air had changed, growing so much colder and stronger. It was air off the rice paddies as my carriage drove past with the cold of night shifting in. We were moving too fast to lift up the blind. I had to be content with sounds, scents, sensations through the air. By this time, we'd passed into the forest where every cricket seemed awake and the trees roared with invisible life.

Prelude
Dusty pages and yellow scrolls, they make up most of my days. Without end, the library stretches from one side of eternity to the other, expanding to swallow every spoken word. For this, I treat the grounds as a living thing, worth as much reverence as any soul.
In my hands are entries from the recent past, the last hundred years. They range from history to geography to neologisms, currant and extinct.
